Jefferson SWCD Board Members
Interested in Becoming a Board Supervisor?
The public officials who are elected to serve as the Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District (JSWCD) supervisors have the responsibility to understand the land and water conditions within the county. Through their leadership and guidance they are able to provide to the county’s residents the best management practices required to conserve and develop its natural resources. Supervisors are the keys to the success of the District’s local conservation efforts.
Soil and water conservation districts are organized in each state under a variety of state agencies. In Ohio, the districts are political subdivisions of state government under the Ohio Department of Agriculture, Division of Soil and Water Conservation. Each elected supervisor is responsible to the citizens of their District and state. Like all public officials the rights and responsibilities of the office are laid out in the applicable sections of the Ohio Revised Code and the Ohio Administrative Code.
The board of supervisors of the JSWCD assist with the development of and carry out an annual plan of work for reaching the objectives and goals of the District. Each supervisor has the important task of governance and coordinating the efforts of all agencies, organizations, and individuals with responsibilities in natural resource conservation and development in the county.
A special election is conducted annually by the Ohio Soil and Water Conservation Commission (OSWCC) to elect supervisors. A local nominating committee is appointed and those members seek interested candidates for consideration. Any resident of Jefferson County who is at least 18 years old may reach out to the nominating committee. Those who choose to self-nominate may complete an OSWCC-Candidate Petition form that includes qualified voter valid signatures. For further information and to find out the submission date for the self nominating petition, contact the JSWCD office at 740 264-9790.
