Watersheds
A definition from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency:
A watershed is the area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it goes into the same place.
John Wesley Powell, scientist geographer, put it best when he said that a watershed is:

"that area of land, a bounded hydrologic system, within which all living things are inextricably linked by their common water course and where, as humans settled, simple logic demanded that they become part of a community."
All of Jefferson County drains to the Ohio River, and most of this drainage is through three primary watersheds. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has recently studied the water quality in all three primary systems. The resulting biological and water quality reports for Short Creek, Cross Creek and Yellow Creek can be found on their respective pages.
JSWCD strives to:
- protect and improve the environment in the watersheds
- identify resources to implement water quality improvement practices
- assist in the balance of the needs of the community and the stewardship in the resource
- inform and involve the public
- and more!
